Good, old-fashioned hustle turned things around yesterday for the Mililani softball team.
Courtney Senas drove in the tying run in the fifth inning by beating out an infield single and host Mililani tacked on three more runs in the inning to beat Waipahu, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference tournament.
"She hustled down the line and it was two outs," said Mililani coach Rose Antonio. "She just did what she had to do, hustle."
The Trojans had Kylee Rodrigues at third with two outs in the fifth when Senas stepped to the plate against Waipahu's Elsa Apo and grounded one in the hole to shortstop Kari Sakamoto. Her throw to first was just late in an attempt to get a diving Senas, as Rodrigues scored to make it 1-1.
Some of the Waipahu defenders were heading off the field as the umpire ruled Senas safe.
"We hold them all the way to that fifth inning, until that call, and everything changed right there," said Waipahu coach Funa Kapihe.
He added: "I thought it was a bad call."
When asked if she thought she was safe, Senas said: "I don't even know. I wasn't looking at the ball. I just dove."
Makani Duhaylonsod followed with a single to left, Glenelle Nitta doubled in two runs and Jaimee Aiwohi had a bloop RBI single to right to make it 4-1.
"The pitch was inside," said Nitta, who hit an 0-1 pitch to the left-field fence. "I don't think it was just my hit, it was everybody."
Mililani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 12-1 and will play East runner-up Kailua in the semifinals today at 5 p.m. at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
The Trojans, the West champions, Kailua, Campbell and Moanalua all qualified for the state tournament with victories yesterday.
"We're very relieved because this is the game with an automatic berth," Antonio said. "All you're doing now is playing for seedings in the states."
Duhaylonsod, a senior right-hander, pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts for Mililani.
"She settled down," Antonio said. "She hit her spots and the defense made the plays."
Mililani added two insurance runs in the sixth on Kristi Oshiro's run-scoring single and Chanelle Senas' RBI triple.
All of Mililani's runs were unearned and came with two outs.
"They don't give up," Antonio said. "They keep fighting till the end. These kids have a lot of heart and a lot of character."
Waipahu scored when Sakamoto led off the game with a double to right-center, was sacrificed to third by Dara Aiwohi, and scored when Apo hit a grounder to second and the throw to the plate was late in an attempt to get Sakamoto.
The Marauders fell to 5-9, and must win both consolation-bracket games to qualify for the state tournament.
After the game, Courtney Senas changed into her track and field uniform behind the dugout and went down to the Mililani High track to participate in the OIA championship trials.
She didn't arrive in time for the long jump, but placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 7 inches.
