Williams leads by 2 in Hickam

Doug Williams fired a 1-under-par 71 for a two-shot lead after the first day of the Hickam Invitational at Mamala Bay yesterday.

David Fink, Michael Kawata and Sergio Meneses were tied for second at 1-over 73.

'Iolani eighth-grader Lorens Chan and three-time champion and Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame inductee Brandan Kop are tied with Joey Sakaue, Neal Takara and Taison Tanaka at 74.

Rudy Cabalar is one shot back at 75.

Last year's champion, Casey Watabu, has since turned pro and can't play in the amateur tournament.

In other divisions, John Iyoki (73) leads A Flight, Jun Cayabyab (79) and Tom Kennedy (79) share the lead in B Flight, Paul Kimura (73) and Gary Kong (73) top the Senior Flight, and George Yamamoto (76) leads the Super Senior Flight.

The second round begins today at 6:40 a.m. The cut will be made after 36 holes and leaders go out around 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.


BASEBALL

DAVIS PITCHES HILO PAST HPU, 6-3

Joe Davis scattered seven hits and struck out nine batters as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Hawai'i Pacific, 6-3, yesterday in non-conference baseball at the UHH baseball field.

The right-handed Davis allowed three runs, one earned, and walked one in nine innings.

The Vulcans (14-27) erased a 3-2 deficit and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run error.

UH-Hilo increased its lead to 6-3 in the next inning on Thomas Brown's two-run single.

UH-Hilo's Keoni Manago was credited with four RBIs, Brown went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Ronel Trias added three hits.

Paul Nishimura had three hits and drove in two runs for HPU (30-17-1).


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

INOUE, HOSE TO SIGN AUTOGRAPHS TODAY

Mixed martial arts stars Egan Inoue and Kala Kolohe Hose will be signing autographs at the Barnes & Noble store in the Ala Moana Shopping Center from noon to 1 p.m. today.

The fighters will appear to help promote the first issue of MMA Hawaii The Magazine.

Inoue, who is scheduled to face Arizona's Hans Marrero Jr. on May 16 at the Blaisdell Center Arena, is featured on the cover of the first issue of the magazine.

A portion of the proceeds from magazine sales will be donated to the Moanalua/'Aiea Community School for Adults.
