Korean movie fans can get their fix of melodrama from local television stations. So, when they go to the movies, they sometimes want something very different. It' s no wonder then that top box-office hits such as "The King and the Clown," "The Host," "Taekgukgi" and various other popular movies do not have the melodrama that hallyu is known for.

The Korean horror genre has been around many years, and what is restricted on TV is definitely not held back in movies.

The latest Korean horror movie released on DVD is "Black House." The film was released in South Korea last year, and the DVD was just released in the United States with English subtitles.

"Black House" (Geoumun Jip), directed by Shin Tarra, stars Hwang Jung-min ("A Bittersweet Life," "You Are My Sunshine"), Yu Sun, Kang Shin-il and Kim Seo-hyung. The story is about an insurance agent, Jeon Junoh (Hwang Jung-min), who suspects murder is linked to a policy payout case.

After a client specifically asks for Junoh, the insurance agent finds the client's son has hanged himself in what appears to be a suicide. Shortly after the funeral, the father badgers Junoh for insurance money. Junoh, haunted by the suicide of his own brother, undertakes some further investigation, which brings trouble for Junoh and everyone around him.

"Black House" reminds you of "Hostel" in the filming style, and has abundant blood and gore. The story takes time to develop; it's not one of those films where you immediately know who the killer is. And when the killer is identified, the movie speeds up with a series of scenes that will keep you in suspense. The ending is not what you would expect.

I enjoyed watching this film, but it definitely pushes my limit on blood and gore.
