Rainbows lose WAC softball tourney opener, 2-1

Advertiser Staff

Krissi Oliver pitched a six-hitter to help Lousiana Tech upset host Hawai'i, 2-1, tonight in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

The outcome sent the Rainbow Wahines (33-18) into the consolation round of the double elimination tournament.

The Rainbows will play the loser of tomorrow's game between Nevada and San Jose State at 4:45 p.m.

The Rainbows will again be short handed for that game. Courtney Baughman, one of two UH starting pitchers, is not expected to be available for the rest of the tournament because of an undisclosed medical condition. That means Kate Robinson, who gave up both of Louisiana Tech's runs yesterday, will have to start in each of the Rainbows' remaining games. The Rainbows' only other starting pitcher is Jessica Morton, who is being used exclusively as a reliever in recent weeks.

Louisiana Tech took a 1-0 on Regan Clark's RBI double in the first inning. It was 2-0 when Oliver hit a bases-empty homer in the second inning.

The Rainbows close to 2-1 on Kate Robinson's home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Rainbows placed runners on second and third with one out but Melissa Gonzalez and Katie Grimes hit flyouts to end the game.
