Business eco-impact meeting today

Businesses can learn new ways to generate revenue, save money and create better products will little or no environmental impact at a luncheon meeting today on "Views on a Sustainable Future."

The meeting is being hosted by Wal-Mart Stores, Hagadone Printing Co. and the Hawaii Publishers Association.

Kevin Loscotoff, senior public affairs manager for Wal-Mart Stores and Erwin Hudelist, president of Hagadone Printing Co., will make presentations.

Those who wish to attend the meeting — 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Natsunoya Tea House, 1935 Makanani Drive — can call the Hawaii Publishers Association at 234-0088. Payments of $25 can be made at the door.


REAL ESTATE CLASSES FOR THOSE LAID OFF

For Aloha Airlines employees, ATA workers and others faced with recent layoffs, Abe Lee Seminars will reduce its tuition for real estate classes to help the employees find new jobs.

Abe Lee Seminars is an authorized school for real estate and broker candidates. All topics of real estate will be covered in 60 hours of classes. Regular tuition begins at $450 for classes and $425 for independent study. Tuition for displaced employees is $250 and $225.

Graduates of Abe Lee Seminars will be assisted in finding employment. Most of these positions are based on commissions.

BAE SYSTEMS BUILDING NEW CENTER

BAE Systems, one of Hawai'i's largest defense contractors, has begun construction of its Pacific Innovation Center at the First Hawaiian Bank building in Downtown Honolulu.

The company said it will use the facility to demonstrate the systems and software it develops in Honolulu for its defense and aerospace electronics business.

The 3,000-square-foot facility is set to open in January. It will be linked electronically with similar BAE Systems facilities in San Diego; Reston, Va; and Nashua, N.H.


FREE CONSULTATIONS ON SBA SERVICES

The U.S. Small Business Administration and several local lenders will offer small-business owners private consultation sessions this month on the Big Island and in central O'ahu.

The SBA Resource Days are designed to increase awareness and use of SBA programs and services. The free 30-minute sessions will address the specific needs of the individual small-business owner.

This month's session days are:

  • Thursday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Central Pacific Bank, Kailua, Kona branch.

  • May 15, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Bank of Hawaii, Waipahu branch.

  • May 29, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., American Savings Bank, Mililani branch.

    CEO OF QUEEN'S RE-ELECTED TO VHA

    The Queen's Medical Center president and CEO Arthur Ushijima has been re-elected to the board of VHA Inc.

    Irving, Texas-based VHA is a healthcare alliance that provides supply-chain services and supports the formation of regional and national networks to help members improve clinical and economic performance. It serves more than 1,400 nonprofit hospitals.
