Isle surfers ousted in longboard contest

Hawai'i surfers Keegan Edwards and Rusty Keaulana were eliminated in the second round of the Oxbow WLT longboard surfing contest yesterday in Anglet, France.

Only five heats of the second round were completed before the contest was postponed for the day due to deteriorating conditions.

Keaulana, a three-time former world champion, lost to Brazil's Danilo Rodrigo; Edwards lost to France's Deniel Alexis.

Hawai'i surfers still remaining in the contest are Duane DeSoto, Dino Miranda, Bonga Perkins, Kai Sallas, Ned Snow and Kekoa Uemura.

UH-HILO MEN FINISH LAST AT DII REGIONALS

University of Hawai'i-Hilo could not pull out of last place on the final day of the eight-team NCAA Division II West Region Championship. The Vulcans closed with a team score of 304 yesterday at Adobe Creek Golf Course, in Petaluma, Calif.

Hilo opened with a 305 Monday and improved 11 shots Tuesday, despite playing the seventh hole in 7-over par. But it dropped back again yesterday, with Jesus Valdivia's even-par 72 the best score. Logan Goulding, who tied for 10th, and Bishara Ari, who got a share of 14th, both shot 76. Isaac Jaffurs' 80 was the final counting score.

Host Sonoma State, ranked second nationally, won the regional with a total of 299—861. Western Washington (288—873) was next, followed by Grand Canyon (288—880). Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Stanislaus tied for fourth (881).

The regional champ automatically qualified for nationals, and Western Washington, Grand Canyon and San Bernardino earned at-large berths, with Stanislaus losing out in a playoff.


SOFTBALL

RAINBOW WAHINE CAMPS BEGIN IN JUNE

Rainbow Wahine softball will have three camps this year, beginning June 18 to 20 with a camp for girls ages 8 to 12. Hours are 4 to 7 p.m. each day and the cost is $100. The camp is designed for beginning players and will cover basic fundamentals, such as hitting, fielding, throwing and base running.

The second camp, June 25 to 27, runs 4 to 6 p.m. and is for girls ages 13 to 18. Cost is $75 and the focus will be "developmental as well as specialized in individual positions."

The final camp is for pitchers, June 28 from noon to 2 p.m. Cost is $35. It is open to all ages. Pitchers must provide their own catchers (parents are welcome).

University of Hawai'i coaches and current and former players conduct the camps, at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
