Water polo: UCLA cruises in quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif. — Former U.S. national junior player Jillian Krause, Katie Rulon and Gabriel Domanic each scored three goals as top-seeded and three-time defending national champion UCLA got past Pomona-Pitzer 16-5 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championships today.
Jackie Gauthier, Kelly Eaton and Lauren Silver each scored twice to lead Stanford (26-4) past Marist 12-1 and Veronika Bartunkova and Sarah Van Norman each scored four goals to lead the Women of Troy (20-7) over Michigan, 12-3.
The top three seeds at the tournament — UCLA (31-0), Stanford, Southern California — have won all seven previous national titles.
Only UC Davis (27-8), with its 9-8 victory over San Diego State (29-7), broke the stranglehold of the top four teams in the nation. Hawai'i beat San Diego State in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament last week, but the Aztecs received the national tournament berth.
"That's an advantage we have that we play in a 13-team conference that has probably the top 10 teams in the country," Bruins coach Adam Krikorian said. "There's pressure all the time to succeed and we're used to it. We're prepared."
All but a handful of the U.S. national team players also played in the NCAA tournament. There are five former Southern California players, and one who took a redshirt year this season, on the Team USA roster. Stanford and UCLA are also well represented and Michigan placed former goalie Betsey Armstrong on the national team.
Michigan junior Mary Chatigny, who scored twice against Southern California, reached Ann Arbor from Palm Springs, Calif.
Tamara Perea and Laura Condon each scored three goals for Pomona-Pitzer (17-12), the top-ranked Division III school.
"My best friend went to a Division I school," Perea said. "I get to say I went to the national championships. Her season was finished two weeks ago. There are Division I teams who are better who don't get to go but Division III Pomona-Pitzer; I think it's incredible and everything I hoped it would be."
Lindsay Kiyama scored two of her three goals in the fourth period to help the Aggies stave off a late Aztec rally. Christi Raycraft also scored three times for UC Davis. Jenna Schuster led San Diego State with three goals.
Marist (27-8) and Michigan (33-10) were fighting against tradition as well as two of the top teams in the country. There's never been a team outside of California in the championship game.
