Maui brushfire blamed on car exhaust

Advertiser Staff

A brushfire that burned an estimated 60 acres Thursday in West Maui was caused by a car's hot tailpipe, Maui County said today.

The fire in Kapalua was located about a quarter of a mile above an area known as Pineapple Hill. No homes were threatened and no injuries were reported.

The fire was brought under control Thursday night and was extinguished at 9:35 a.m. today.

Fire officials have determined that the fire was ignited by a car's exhaust system while it was parked over tall grass. The fire was reported at 3 p.m. Thursday. Fire personnel were on scene last night conducting mop-up operations.
