The state's largest meat processor yesterday issued a recall of certain May's brand ground beef products after a strain of E. coli bacteria was detected in unused source material.
Palama Meat Co. said none of the recalled product has tested positive for E. coli and that no illnesses have been reported in connection with this batch of ground beef.
About 40 percent of the 4,500 recalled cases of May's hamburger patties and other ground beef products had been recovered as of yesterday, the company said.
Palama Meat Co. said it found E. coli strains 0157:STX1 and STX2 in a batch of raw material purchased from an outside vendor, and processed by the company between April 9 and 21.

Consumers can return these products to where they were purchased for refunds.
Palama Meat Co. said the recall is the first in the 55-year history of the company, which has processed more than 80 million pounds of products in the past 10 years.
