Kauai breezes past Kohala

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

On a breezy afternoon, Kaua'i managed to turn its game yesterday against Kohala into a blow out.

David Jordan Buster and Braden Balocan combined on a no-hitter and faced the minimum 18 batters, and Kaua'i had 13 hits in a 10-0 victory over Kohala in the quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball Division II State Championships.

The game at Central O'ahu Regional Park's Field No. 2 was shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule.

"I guess we hit the ball well," said Kaua'i coach Hank Ibia. "Starting pitcher, Jordan Buster, he's been our ace all year. He threw well."

Kaua'i, the No. 1 seed and Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion, improved to 12-1. The Red Raiders will play Moloka'i today in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. on Field No. 1.

Jordan Buster, a senior left-hander, needed only 29 pitches to complete the first three innings. He struck out three and the lone base runner he allowed reached on a fielding error by the shortstop with one out in the second.

Jordan Buster got the next batter to hit into a nifty 3-6-3 double play, started by Schyler Arakaki, who threw to shortstop Jonathan Gebauer and took the return throw to first.

"I just put it out and left it all on the field and did my best," Jordan Buster said.

Balocan, a senior right-hander, needed only 26 pitches to complete the final three innings for the save.

"I pretty much trusted my fastball; two-seam (grip)," Balocan said. "I threw one or two curveball here and there to throw them off."

He walked the first batter he faced. After a sacrifice bunt, the runner was thrown out at third trying to advance on a fly ball to center fielder Ryson Sakamoto.

"Our defense, our nine guys, we're pretty strong," Ibia said.

The stiff breeze blowing in from left didn't hinder Kaua'i, which scored in each of the first four innings, including three each in the first and third.

Sakamoto batted 3 for 3 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs, and batter Schyler Arakaki went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

"They are well-disciplined and they hit like heck," said Kohala coach Steve Nakamura.

Kaua'i ended the game in the sixth by mercy rule on four consecutive pinch-hit singles. Dalston Miyasato and Markus Oketani drove in the runs.

Kohala, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's No. 4 team, fell to 8-7.

ST. ANTHONY 9, MARYKNOLL 1

St. Anthony's starter Michael Jahns brought the heat and his offense applied the pressure.

Jahns and Joshua Hansen combined on a two-hitter, and the Trojans stole six bases in a quarterfinal win over the Spartans.

"I had to use my fastball all game," Jahns said. "My curveball wasn't working."

St. Anthony, the No. 2 seed and Maui Interscholastic League champion, improved to 12-2. The Trojans will face Kalaheo in the semifinals today at 3:30 p.m.

Jahns allowed one run over the first four innings. He allowed a lead-off triple in the first to Zachary Fujimoto, and he came around to score on a ground out.

Jahns had the bases loaded and one out in the second, but got a strikeout and pop out to end the inning.

"Our starter Michael Jahns did a good job. He is our No. 1 pitcher," said St. Anthony coach Shane Dudoit.

Jahns left with a 6-1 lead.

Hansen, also a senior right-hander, allowed a double over the final three innings for the save.

The top three hitters in St. Anthony's order — Aronne Santos, Jordan Kahalekai-Bermoy and Jahns — each reached three times in four plate appearances. They combined to score six runs.

Kahalekai-Bermoy had three stolen bases, and the Trojans also successfully executed two hit-and-runs.

"We try to put pressure on defenses," Dudoit said. "We will run until it gets stopped and go from there."

Maryknoll, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu representative, dropped to 1-15.
