Fresh-produce coupons for low-income seniors

Starting tomorrow, Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. will be qualifying seniors age 60 and over for $50 in fresh-produce coupons under the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

To qualify, seniors must be at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. That means the cutoff for individual earnings is $22,126 annually.

More than 5,000 coupons will be distributed in Maui County. They must be used between June 1 and Sept. 30 to purchase produce at farmers markets and other fresh-produce outlets certified by MEO.

To qualify, bring proof of income and photo identification to MEO offices. The agency also will take applications and distribute coupons from 8 a.m. to noon June 7 and 14 at the Maui Mall farmers market.

For more information, call MEO Community Services 249-2970. Farmers who want to participate in the program should contact Agnes Groff at 249-2990, ext. 231.
