Punahou boys, Kamehameha girls win state track titles

MILILANI — The Punahou boys and Kamehameha girls won state track and field team titles by slim margins at tonight's Island Movers/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association championships at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium.

Punahou finished with 55.75 points while Radford was second with 52.

Kamehameha finished with 59.25 points, just ahead of second-place Punahou which scored 55.75. Kahuku was third with 46.

Zach Cornoas of Punahou defended his 400-meter dash title for the Buffanblu's only win last night, but a solid team effort helped the Buffanblu defend their state title and win their fourth team title since 2001. Coronas was also third in the 100.

Punahou's Abe Markowitz was the runner-up in the shot put and discus, scoring 16 points by himself and the Buffanblu had athletes who scored points in half of the meet's 16 events.

Radford's Christopher Rainey broke the boys 200 record by 0.01 seconds. He won in 21.89 in a stellar performance at the state meet. He also won the 100, barely missing the state meet record by 0.09 seconds. He finished in 10.89.

Radford's 4x100 relay team of Donniqtay Campbell, Jonathan Atangan, Ikaika Kamaka and Rainey broke the meet record of 42.78 in Friday's trials with a time of 42.53 The Rams won yesterday, finishing in 42.55. The same four also won the 4x400.

"It feels good," Atangan said of the 4x100 record. "We had a lot of other teams run fast."

Baldwin's Joey Amescua won his third straight boys 800 title, winning in 1:55.01.

"It wasn't so much about getting the medals, but improve in each race and up my standards," said Amescua, who also helped the Bears finish second in the 4x400 relay.

Javen Correia of Maryknoll capped off an undefeated season, winning both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Kaiser's Dawson Vorderbruegge broke the boys 3,000 record with a time of 8:58.14, breaking Todd Iacovelli's mark of 9:01.80 from 2002.

Kahuku freshman Zhane Santiago won three girls events, doubling up in both hurdle events and winning the triple jump.

She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.12 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 46.22, and jumped 35-7.

"I was expecting really hard competition, but I tried my best," Santiago said. "All of these girls are good out here.

"(I really wanted to win) the 100 hurdles, because I knew (Ka'u's Larissa Edwards) was really good," she added. "I didn't want to let myself down."

Two Neighbor Island runners also won multiple events.

Seabury Hall freshman phenom Kailea Tracy-Visintainer lived up to her hype, winning both the 400 (56.98) and 200 (25.06) and King Kekaulike junior Bailey Massenburg won the 1,500 (5:17.47) and 800 (2:19.21).
