Kamehameha stops Mililani for state Division I softball championship
Amber Waracka pitched her third straight shutout last night, a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks, to lift Kamehameha to a 3-0 victory over Mililani and its first Data House Softball State Championship since 2002.
A capacity crowd of about 1,200 at Rainbow Wahine Stadium watched the Warriors score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the regular and postseason with a 16-1 record.
Waracka, a senior right-hander, pitched three complete games in the tournament and allowed only 11 hits with 44 strikeouts and four walks in 24 innings.
Kamehameha, the No. 2 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, took a 1-0 lead after Jamie Millwood led off the top of the fourth with a single to left field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. She scored on Pomaika'i Kalakau's single to right after the ball was bobbled by the fielder.
The Warriors made it 2-0 in the fifth after Dara Pagaduan doubled to center field with two outs and scored on Shaleese Javillo's single to center. They added one more run in the seventh after Pagaduan reached on a two-out, two base error, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield error.
Meanwhile, Waracka retired the first 10 Trojans in order until Chanelle Senas reached on an infield single with one out in the fourth. The only other hits she allowed were Glenelle Nitta's leadoff bunt single in the fifth, Rebecca Lee's leadoff infield single in the sixth and Kristi Oshiro's single to left one batter later.
Courtney Senas then walked to load the bases with one out, but Waracka got a strikeout and flyout to left to escape the jam.
