CHICAGO — Leslie Osborne, a midfielder on the U.S. women's team, will miss the Olympics after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

Osborne was hurt during practice at Carson, Calif., on Thursday, according to the U.S. Soccer Federation. She will have knee surgery in the next week and will have reconstructive ankle surgery in about a month.

"I'm going to get both surgeries done and my plan is to be back 100 percent for the new pro league," Osborne said in a statement released Sunday by the USSF. "Hopefully, I'll make a run for the next World Cup, and then one day get to play in an Olympics."

Osborne, who turns 25 Tuesday, will need 8-to-10 months of rehabilitation.

"I'm obviously extremely disappointed that I won't be playing in this Olympics, but I am most disappointed about not being able to be with my team," Osborne said.

The U.S. team, the defending Olympic champion, plays first-round games in China against Norway (Aug. 6), Japan (Aug. 9) and New Zealand (Aug. 12).
