Punahou School senior Stephanie Kono shot a final-round 5-over-par 77 yesterday to finish in a tie for ninth at the Thunderbird International Junior in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Meanwhile, Chan Kim, a former Kaimuki High student who won the state high school title as a sophomore in 2006, shot a 4-under-par 68 to finish tied for second in the boys division.

Kono started the day tied for second, but managed just one birdie in her round that also included four bogeys and one double bogey. She finished with a 6-over 222 total.

Jessica Wallace of Langley, British Columbia, who entered the day four strokes off the lead in a tie for fourth, shot a 5-under 67 to win the title. She finished at 3-under 213.

"My short game was really good all week," said the Pepperdine-bound Wallace, who posted the lowest competitive round of her career. "My game feels really good right now. I'm just going to try and keep it up and get ready for the next tournament."

Second-round leader Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., shot 3-over 75 to finish second with 1-over 217.

Kim, who moved to Chandler, Ariz., last year, finished with a 6-under 210 total. Hyun Seok Lim of Fullerton, Calif., shot a final-round 67 to finish with 209.

"All the players ahead of me are so solid I knew they weren't going to fall back to me," said the USC-bound Kim, who started the day four strokes behind leader William Kroop of Edmond, Okla. Kroop finished at 210.
