Crosby leads Penguins back into Stanley Cup contention

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — How many years does it take for a player to become legendary?

That continues to be a relevant question with regard to 20-year-old Sidney Crosby, who added another story to his collection by scoring two goals to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings that put Pittsburgh back in contention in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Penguins still trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven series, but their situation going into Saturday's Game 4 at Mellon Arena is significantly improved.

Adam Hall banked a shot off Detroit goalie Chris Osgood's backside at 7:18 of the third period to give the Penguins an insurance goal.

Crosby scored an even-strength goal at 17:25 of the first period after Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart's pass hit Henrik Zetterberg's skate and caromed to Marian Hossa.

Crosby's goal was Pittsburgh's first of the Finals and ended a scoreless slump of 153 minutes, 22 seconds, a team record.

In the second period, Crosby scored a power-play goal, sweeping the puck into a half-empty net after Hossa's shot was stopped.

The Penguins had been outshot 9-1 when Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien decided to put slumping Evgeni Malkin with Crosby and Hossa, and that immediately sparked a Pittsburgh surge. The Penguins seemed supercharged after that point, particularly following Crosby's goal.

In the second period, Detroit's Johan Franzen danced around defenseman Rob Scuderi and beat Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with a shot over Fleury's shoulder that cut Pittsburgh's lead to 2-1.

Franzen has 28 goals in his past 29 games, dating to the regular season.

Trailing 3-1 after Hall's goal, the Red Wings' Mikael Samuelsson then answered with a goal at 13:37 of the third period, on a shot from the right wing circle.

The Red Wings got a chance to tie at 15:42 when Malkin was penalized for hooking Niklas Kronwall, but they were unable to convert on the power play.
