Puna man, 27, dies after falling at Boiling Pots

A 27-year-old Puna man died Tuesday of injuries suffered while scaling rocks at Boiling Pots, also known as Pe'epe'e Falls.

Big Island police were called to the scene at 12:21 p.m., and learned that Vincent E. Scerbo of the 'Ainaloa subdivision in Puna had climbed up a rock face and was standing under a waterfall when he fell or jumped. He surfaced once and disappeared under the water, onlookers reported.

A Fire Department crew using divers and a rescue helicopter recovered Scerbo's body. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.
