Ala Moana assault, forgery suspect charged

By Rod Ohira
Advertiser Staff Writer

Police yesterday arrested a 27-year-old man on four warrants charging him with first-degree assault, second-degree forgery, second-degree theft and unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.

All are felony offenses related to an Oct. 21 incident on Kahakai Drive near Ala Moana Center in which a Honolulu police officer investigating a forgery-in-progress complaint was struck by a vehicle driven by the suspect.

Aaron J. Capello, who abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, was initially arrested by police on Oct. 24 at 98-0175 Kaonohi St. in Waimalu. After booking, Capello was released pending further investigation because he had to be admitted to an unnamed hospital for treatment of an infected upper-body injury allegedly sustained while scaling a fence during his escape Oct. 21.

While in the hospital under police guard, authorities obtained warrants charging Capello. A first-degree attempted murder count was amended to first-degree assault. Capello was arrested yesterday at 3 p.m. upon his release from the hospital.

He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the main police station cellblock pending an initial hearing tomorrow at District Court.

The injured officer was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.

The officer had responded to an establishment on Kahakai Drive on a witness complaint about the alleged forgery at 7:21 p.m. As the officer approached, Capello attempted to flee and in the process, allegedly drove his vehicle several times toward the officer.

Capello, who lists no permanent local address, is under investigation for several other forgery-related cases.
