Bill Amis had 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead the University of Hawai'i-Manoa men's basketball team to a 72-70 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo tonight.
Petras Balocka added 16 points and eight rebounds as the Rainbow Warriors held off a late rally by the scrappy Vulcans.
A crowd of 2,203 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the NCAA Division I ¹Bows defeat the NCAA-II Vulcans. The final result and statistics will not count for either team this season.
The ¹Bows led for most of the game, but surrendered a 14-point lead late in the second half. UH-Hilo took a momentary 68-67 lead on a four-point play by Jay DeMaestri with 3:12 remaining. He drained a 3-pointer, got fouled, and made the ensuing free throw.
Prior to that, the ¹Bows had a 67-53 lead with 7:49 remaining.
The Vulcans had another chance to tie it late in the game, but DeMaestri missed a free throw with 29.7 seconds remaining. UH-Hilo also had the last possession of the game, but John Smith missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
The ¹Bows took a 39-32 lead at halftime, with Amis and Balocka scoring 10 points each in the first half.
DeMaestri led the Vulcans with 21 points, including four 3-pointers.
Hawai'i played without prized recruit Roderick Flemings, who is in Dallas for the funeral of his grandfather.
Hawai'i will play another exhibition game on Friday, when it hosts Chaminade at the Stan Sheriff Center.
