LOGAN, Utah — Did the 30-14 upset of the University of Hawai'i save embattled Utah State coach Brent Guy's job?
Nobody was saying yesterday, but the victory over a team the Aggies hadn't come close to competing with in three previous Western Athletic Conference meetings sure couldn't have hurt.
"Give him credit," UH coach Greg McMackin said. "He needed the win."
Guy is 2-7 this year and 8-36 (7-22 WAC) overall in the fourth year of a five-year contract and there has been rampant speculation about whether he will be back next season.
"I know they (Aggie fans) were all over his case, but he is a heckuva coach and he does a great job," McMackin said. "He's got young players and players that are playing their tails off. He gets his team ready to play and I have a lot of respect for him."
Only a 58-yard field goal as time expired last week kept Fresno State from also succumbing to the Aggies.
"Anybody that is trying to get rid of him doesn't know what football is all about," McMackin said. "They need to get off his case."
INJURY UPDATES
Defensive back Mana Silva suffered UH's only significant injury in the game, McMackin said.
Silva, who left Romney Stadium on crutches, was rolled into by another player and left hobbling on his left ankle and foot.
His status for the New Mexico State game is uncertain.
UH had hoped to be able to play defensive tackle Josh Leonard, who suffered a sprained ankle in the Nevada game, but held him out.
"We thought he would be ready, but he was still hurting," McMackin said. Leonard had started all eight previous games.
Running back/slotback Kealoha Pilares spent the game on the sidelines in street clothes, still recovering from a sprained right foot.
McMackin said he is hopeful of having Pilares for the NMSU game.
Warriors in Seattle?
Hawai'i could put in an appearance at Seattle's Qwest Field, home of the Seahawks, next season.
UH is scheduled to play Washington State Sept. 12, 2009 in Pullman, Wash., but discussions are under way to move the game to Seattle, athletic director Jim Donovan said
The Cougars annually play a non-conference game in Seattle to boost their visibility and reach a large alumni base.
UH is scheduled to play the University of Washington in Seattle in 2011.
GRASSO DRAWS FANS
Punter Tim Grasso, who is from nearby Kaysville, Utah, clearly had the biggest rooting section with what his father, Mark, said were 59 friends and relatives in attendance.
Grasso averaged 42.7 yards on three punts.
MOUTON DOUBLES UP
Cornerback/slotback Ryan Mouton continued his two-way duties. He caught three passes for 13 yards and had one run on a fly sweep for no gain.
On defense, Mouton assisted on one tackle.
FIRST FOR MEATOGA
Freshman defensive lineman Vaughn Meatoga got his first start as a Warrior and was in on two tackles, one of them a sack he shared with David Veikune.
Senior safety Desmond Thomas made his first start of the season and was in on one tackle.
