Newcomer Democrat Jessica Wooley was ahead in the House District 47 with 1,552 votes or 53.4 percent.
Incumbent Republican Colleen Meyer received 1,255 votes in the first printout of results or 43.2 percent
Meyer, 69, is known to speak out against the majority party in the Legislature and said she had to step up her campaign this year as the unions and the Democrat Party applied a "full court press" to win her district, which she's represented for 14 year.
People vote for her because of what she stands for, she said.
"I've got the guts to say what I think," Meyer said. "I've always been a very strong voice for businesses, for conservative values and I'm fiscally conservative."
Recognizing her worth, the Republican Party threw extra support to her campaign with added brochures and manpower, she said. With the help of the party she was able to raise about $40,000 for her campaign. She has never had as much campaign money as she felt she needed in the past.
Wooley, who touts her environmental record for protecting the land, streams and ocean, said tried to reach out to the community, going door to door to get her message of concern about working families.
A newcomer to politics, she said she campaigned vigorously, knowing the Republican Party targeted this race.
An attorney, Wooley said she would focus on the farmers and promoting local businesses, agriculture and alternative energy. But education is a priority and with all the budget cuts that face the state, it must spare the Department of Education.
"It's not prudent for us to be significantly cutting education funds," she said.
