Much has been written about the potency of a single vote in a close contest. But even in elections that are heavily weighted for one side or another, a vote still can have a powerful effect — on the voter.

The simple act of casting a ballot in a democratic society helps the one casting it to feel vested in the process of government. It's an expression of caring for how the public's interests are served, and it's harder to retreat into apathy once that expression becomes a habit.

Regardless of the outcome, a high voter turnout also reminds those in power that the source of their power — the electorate — is watching. Politicians, like anyone, behave better when the spotlight illuminates them.
