SHIMA, Japan — Japan's Mayu Hattori and Miki Saiki shot 5-under 67s on Friday to share the first-round lead in the Mizuno Classic.
Women's British Open champion Shin Ji-yai was a stroke back along with Lim Eun-a in the event sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and Japan LPGA.
Defending champion Momoko Ueda, the first Japanese player to win the event in nine years, opened with a 70 on the Kinetsu Kashikojima Country Club course.
Japanese star Ai Miyazato shot a 71, and 2006 winner Karrie Webb had a 72. American Morgan Pressel was tied for last in the 77-player field at 75.
Hattori, the IDC Otsuka Ladies winner last week on the JLPGA, had a bogey-free round. She birdied all of the par 5s, making an 18-foot putt on the 10th.
"I started off from the 10th hole with a good tee shot, which helped me start off in a good mood," Hattori said. "I only missed the fairways twice and I only missed the green twice."
Saiki had six birdies and a bogey.
"As a whole, my shots weren't perfect," Saiki said. "But my short game and putting helped me a lot."
