Eight people are without a home tonight after a fire damaged their home on Kaonohi Street in 'Aiea.

Fire officials said a mother and child escaped the fire, but the structure, which was home to four adults and four children, has been deemed unlivable.

Firefighters estimate the damage to total $135,0000, of which $25,000 is for the contents, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig.

Five Honolulu fire department engine companies, two ladder companies and a battalion chief responded to the 10:24 a.m. blaze at a townhouse complex at 98-949 Kaonohi St. in 'Aiea.

The American Red Cross Hawai'i State Chapter met with the residents to ensure that they have housing, clothing and food.

A maintenance man at the complex was being treated by firefighters and EMS after he and a fellow maintenance man tried to battle the fire with garden hoses. Police closed Kaonohi Street until about noon following the blaze.
