Malik new chief of Aloha Air Cargo

Mike Malik has been named president of Aloha Air Cargo, the company announced.

Malik brings more than two decades of experience in the airline business to his new post. As president, Malik is responsible for the overall operations of the airline.

"In addition to having a wealth of knowledge and experience in all aspects of airline operations, Mike Malik is genuinely passionate about building upon the legacy of this great company and taking it to new heights," said Tim Engle, president of Saltchuk Resources, Aloha Air Cargo's owner.

Prior to joining Aloha Air Cargo as senior vice president, Malik served as the chief information officer for Aloha Airlines. Before his tenure at Aloha Airlines, he helped start MAXjet Airways, and served as its chief marketing officer.


GO! PASSENGER COUNT UP IN OCTOBER

Interisland airline go! said its passenger count increased more than 18 percent in October.

The carrier said it flew 63,482 passengers last month, which was up from 53,559 in October 2007.

The company said its planes were 70.8 percent full last month, which was up from the year-earlier month's 67.2 percent. go! increased its passenger capacity this year after Aloha Airlines, the state's No. 2 carrier, shut down its passenger service.


AUGUST GAS SALES DOWN 6.4 PERCENT

Hawai'i gasoline consumption fell 6.4 percent in August as the average price of a gallon of regular remained above the $4.30 mark.

That's some of the information contained in the state's latest Energy Trend Data report. On-road diesel fuel use was off 14.3 percent during the month compared with August 2007, while crude oil imports declined 7.6 percent in August compared with a year earlier.

The report also shows that the national average gas price for the first nine months of the year was 31 percent higher than in 2007, while Hawai'i's statewide price was 26 percent higher for the same period.


VERIZON ADDS CELL SITE ON BIG ISLAND

Verizon Wireless has added a new cellular site on the Big Island that improves 3G coverage and call capacity at the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and Jagger Museum and Observatory.

The recent expansion adds to Verizon Wireless' $17 million investment in Hawai'i so far this year. Nationwide, the company has invested nearly $48 billion since it was formed — $5.5 billion on average every year — to increase the coverage and capacity of its national wireless network and to add services.

"Our network expansion in Hawai'i is just another example of how we invest to stay ahead of demand and to make sure that our customers enjoy a superior wireless experience," said Mark Yamauchi, director of sales for Hawai'i.


HD&C WINS PEARL PIER-REPAIR ORDER

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. Inc. has won a $7.39 million order for wharf repairs at Pearl Harbor under a previously awarded contract.

The project includes repairs and preservation of pier superstructure, a fender system, concrete supporting pillars and decking. The project completion date is scheduled for February 2010.
