No. 1 seed HBA, Kailua advance to DII semis

The Hawai'i Baptist girls volleyball team is a collection of similar, well-rounded players

Not surprisingly the stat lines of the Eagles' top three players looked very similar in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 victory last night over Castle at Farrington.

Chelsie Mow had 11 kills and nine digs, Sarah Palmer added 10 kills and 14 digs, and C'era Oliveira had nine kills and 10 digs as Hawai'i Baptist swept Castle in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division II State Championships.

"We don't try to win or lose matches, we try to make plays," said Hawai'i Baptist coach Myles Shioji.

Hawai'i Baptist, the defending DII state champion, will play Kailua in the semifinals tonight at 7 at Farrington.

Kailua, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up, beat No. 4 seed Hilo in four sets in last night's earlier match.

In the first set, Hawai'i Baptist, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and No. 1 seed, led 18-10. Castle couldn't get closer than five the rest of the way.

Oliveira had five kills and Palmer added four in the set for the Eagles.

Hawai'i Baptist (17-2) led the second set 11-3, but Castle got within 13-11 after Malina Kekahuna served three in a row. The Eagles then scored five of the next six points to regain control.

Mow had five kills without an error in the set for Hawai'i Baptist, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll.

Castle, the OIA's No. 3 team, took its first lead of any set in the third after a double contact by Hawai'i Baptist made it 7-6. The Eagles then gradually pulled away.

"Every girl on that team knows how it is to play year-round," said Castle coach Brannan Bajet. "They played at a fast tempo against a slower team."

Erika Jarrett had five kills and Kekahuna had 16 digs to lead Castle (14-6).

KAILUA DEFEATS HILO

In the beginning and end, Kailua's Kayzsa Konohia was there to dominate last night against Hilo.

Kayzsa had seven kills in the first set and five in the fourth as Kailua beat Hilo, 25-13, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, in a quarterfinal match at Farrington.

"In the first and fourth we wanted to start off and finish the game," said Konohia, who finished with 16 kills.

Sherie Recca had 10 kills, and Ashlin Akau added eight kills and five block assists for Kailua (16-3).

"They always contribute to the team," said Kailua assistant coach Gavin Kepa. "Both played really well. Everyone played well."

Kailua, the OIA runner-up, finished with 45 kills and 15 hitting errors. Hilo, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, also had 45 kills, but finished with 28 hitting errors.

"I thought they did very well at keeping the ball in play and letting us make the mistakes," said Hilo coach Brennan Wong.

Konohia finished with just three hitting errors.

"We tried to give our all tonight," she said. "We thought it could be our last game."

Makamae Namahoe had 12 kills and Kahealani Vento-Rowe added 11 for Hilo (16-3).
