BEIJING — Jeremy Abbott led an American double in the men's competition at the Cup of China today, and South Korea's Kim Yu-na held onto her lead to win the women's event.
Abbott followed up his win in Friday's short program by leading fellow American Stephen Carriere with a free skate that included a triple axel-triple toeloop combination and a triple lutz-double toe-double loop for a score of 156.39.
The performance was Abbott's second straight personal best in the competition and gave him a total score of 233.44 — 27.40 points better than his previous high.
"My coaches Becky Calvin and Tom Zakrajsek have trained me very hard this year," Abbott said. "I just really wanted to put out two very strong programs that I could feel very confident and comfortable with."
Carriere, the 2007 junior world champion, received 145.25 points in the free program to finish second with 217.25 points. Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic was third with a total of 205.48.
The 18-year-old Kim produced a double axel-triple toeloop combination and a triple flip-triple toeloop in her program to "Sheherazade," receiving 128.11 points for a total of 191.75.
"I felt tense in the short program on Thursday, and I tried to be more relaxed today, and I felt good on the ice," she said. "My first triple lutz was not stable, but I could do a combination with my second Lutz and so I don't think that the error affected my score a lot."
Japan's Miki Ando was second with 111.58 to claim silver with a 170.88 points, while Finland's Laura Lepisto was third and American Ashley Wagner was fourth.
In ice dance, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto of the U.S. were edged by Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia. The Americans finished with 186.41 points to the Russians' 186.77. Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski of Russia were third with 179.50.
The Russians' margin in the free dance was even slimmer, getting 91.19 points for their performance to "Spartacus," while Belbin and Agosto received 91.18 for their program to "Tosca."
"We are happy with our first place here," Shabalin said. "We skated well for this period of time. We'll try to improve our skating and do better and better each time."
Another Russian pair, Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski, finished third both in the free dance and overall.
The Cup of China is the third of six events in the International Skating Union's Grand Prix series.
