A Pahoa man was killed Saturday in an early morning traffic collision in Puna on the Big Island.
Speed and alcohol may be contributing factors in the 4:02 a.m. collision between a 2003 Mazda four-door sedan and a 2008 Mazda multipurpose vehicle on Kahakai Boulevard, seven-tenths of a mile west of Kikou Street in Hawaiian Beaches. The collision killed Pablo Arroyo-Patricio, 28, according to Traffic Enforcement Unit supervising investigator Sgt. Christopher D. Gali.
Arroyo-Patricio's car, headed east, crossed the centerline and collided with the westbound multipurpose vehicle, police said. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:14 a.m. The driver of the multi-purpose vehicle, a 30-year-old Pahoa man, was treated for minor injuries at Hilo Medical Center and released.
The death is the Big Island's 23rd traffic fatality of the year.
