FUKUOKA, Japan — Grand champion Hakuho survived lower-ranked Futeno's persistent ringside push Tuesday and added another win at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.
Mongolian Hakuho nearly slipped at the edge of the straw ridge, but held steady and toppled his opponent with an arm throw in the final bout at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
Hakuho, seeking a ninth Emperor's Cup at the 15-day tournament, is now 2-1. Futeno, a top maegashira, is winless at 0-3.
Hakuho's rival yokozuna Asashoryu is sitting out the tournament with an elbow injury.
Mongolian Ama, bidding for promotion to sumo's second-highest rank of ozeki, was bulldozed out by Kisenosato, his first defeat against two wins. Kisenosato, the No. 4 maegashira, extended his winning streak and took a share of the 3-0 lead with seven other wrestlers.
Komusubi Aminishiki scored an easy win over Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu as he quickly stepped to the side after slapping the senior wrestler on the back and sending him to the dirt surface on all fours. Aminishiki is 3-0, while Kotooshu sank to 1-2.
Estonian sekiwake Baruto pulled a winless Goeido by the neck and slapped him on the back, sending his opponent diving to the ground. Baruto collected his first win this tournament against two losses.
No. 2 maegashira Wakanosato threw down ozeki Kaio, who landed on and appeared to hurt his shoulder. Wakanosato improved to 3-0.
