A 12-year-old Big Island boy died today from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Kamaoa Road, one-tenth mile south of Holokai Street in the area of Discovery Harbour subdivision in the Ka'u District.
Police identified the victim as Blaycen Jara of Na'alehu.
Traffic Enforcement Unit investigations supervisor Sgt. Christopher D. Gali said the victim was a passenger in a 1994 Honda two-door sedan driven by a 17-year-old boy from Na'alehu. The driver was headed north on Kamaoa Road when he lost control of the car, which struck a utility pole and overturned, said Gali.
Police were notified at 2:14 p.m.
Jara was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 7:52 p.m.
The driver was taken by Fire Rescue personnel to Kona Community Hospital, where he is in guarded condition. Another passenger in the car, an 18-year-old Na'alehu man was flown by the Fire Department helicopter to Hilo Medical Center. He was listed in serious condition.
Speed appears to be a factor but it is unknown if alcohol, Gali said. All three occupants of the vehicle were not wearing their seatbelts.
The death is the Big Island's 24th traffic fatality this year.
