Peter McGonigle Wenner of Los Angeles, a member of the University of Hawai'i coed sailing team, died from "complications of near drowning in salt water due to being entangled in a capsized sailboat," according to autopsy findings released today by the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office.
Manner of death was determined to be accidental.
Wenner, 19, died yesterday at Straub Clinic & Hospital.
Police said Wenner was aboard a sailboat that capsized about two miles off Waikiki Saturday at 5 p.m. He became tangled in the sailboat's equipment and was trapped under water for between five and 10 minutes before being freed.
