CBKB: Florida guard Calathes ran up poker debt

Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida guard Nick Calathes ran up about $600 in debt playing poker online but did not bet on sporting events, which would have violated NCAA rules, according to a Yahoo.com report.

The Web site's report Friday cited unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

An investigation by the school's athletic department did not find evidence of wrongdoing by Calathes or other Florida basketball players that would affect their eligibility or impact the school, athletic director Jeremy Foley told the Web site.

Calathes is expected to play against Toledo in the Gators' season opener later Friday.

"Obviously, we were aware of some information before," Foley, who declined to discuss any specific players, told the Web site. "Whether it's this situation here or any situation we have dealt with in my 17 years as athletic director, that stuff is taken very, very seriously.

"The university feels very good about where it is. We do not have a serious issue here based on the information we have."
