BYUH falls in soccer regional

Shelby Wong scored in the second overtime period as UC San Diego defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 1-0, yesterday in a first-round NCAA Division II West Regional women's soccer game at Seattle.

The 19th-ranked Tritons improved to 15-3-4.

Emily Mearns took eight shots, including two on goal, for the Pacific West Conference champion Seasiders (14-5).

"We had our opportunities out there," BYUH coach William Mahoni said. "Our girls just wanted to play hard, and they did."

LAJOLA FALLS IN FUTURES

Adam El Mihdawy of New York defeated defending champion Dennis Lajola of 'Aiea, 6-3, 6-4, yesterday in the second round of the USTA Pro Circuit Honolulu Futures event at the Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.

Also yesterday, Hawai'i Pacific's Hendrik Bode was ousted by Alexander Domijan, 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles team of Ikaika Jobe of Honolulu and Brad Lum-Tucker of Kaua'i fell to James Ludlow and Andreas Siljestrom, 6-0, 6-1.

SOERO A SHOT OFF LEAD

Former University of Hawai'i player Pierre-Henri Soero is one shot off the lead halfway through the Second Stage PGA Tour Qualifying at Brooksville, Fla.

Soero shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday at Southern Hills Plantation Club. With a 36-hole total of 6-under 138, he trails five players — including Robert Gamez — who have a share of first.
