MOSCOW, Idaho — Boise State usually moves the ball through the air, but Jeremy Avery had other plans yesterday against rival Idaho.
Avery rushed for a career-high 156 yards, the first Bronco back to top 100 this season, and No. 9 Boise State piled up 315 yards rushing in crushing Idaho, 45-10, to keep alive its hopes of returning to a BCS bowl.
"The running game was huge," said quarterback Kellen Moore, who between handoffs completed 23 of 31 passes for 210 yards.
Boise State (10-0, 6-0 Western Athletic) won its 10th straight over the Vandals and clinched at least a share of its sixth WAC title in the past seven seasons.
Idaho (2-9, 1-6) trailed just 17-10 at halftime. But Boise State scored the first four times it had the ball in the second half to blow the game open.
Avery, a 168-pound sophomore, scored on runs of 19 and 57 yards.
Coach Chris Petersen said he's been waiting all season for this sort of running game to emerge.
"We know we can throw it," he said.
Boise State, ninth in the latest BCS standings, is trying to make the Bowl Championship Series for the second time in three seasons. To cash a big BCS check, the Broncos must sweep WAC rivals Nevada and Fresno State and probably need undefeated Utah, No. 7 in the standings, to lose.
NO. 23 OREGON STATE 34, CALIFORNIA 21
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Freshman Jacquizz Rodgers and his older brother James each ran for touchdowns as the Beavers (7-3, 6-1 Pac-10) defeated the Bears (6-4, 4-3) to edge closer to their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1965.
Because Oregon State defeated then-No. 1 USC 27-21 on Sept 21, the Beavers hold the tiebreaker for a Rose Bowl berth should both teams win out. Oregon State visits Arizona next weekend before hosting Oregon in the Civil War rivalry game.
NEVADA 41, SAN JOSE STATE 17
RENO, Nev. — Colin Kaepernick rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns and Vai Taua rushed for 125 and a touchdown as the Wolf Pack (6-4, 4-2) became bowl-eligible with a rout of the Spartans (6-5, 4-3) at Reno, Nev.
The Wolf Pack scored the first 17 points of the game and led 17-3 at halftime, scoring on a 35-yard field goal by Brett Jaekle and touchdown runs by Kaepernick and Taua.
ARIZONA STATE 31, WASHINGTON STATE 0
TEMPE, Ariz. — Rudy Carpenter threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns — increasing his career total to 80, third in Pac-10 history — as the Sun Devils (4-6, 3-4 Pac-10) routed the Cougars (1-10, 0-8) for their first shutout since a 19-0 victory over top-ranked Nebraska on Sept. 21, 1996, a span of 152 games.
Washington State plays at Hawai'i, Nov. 29 at Aloha Stadium.
LOUISIANA TECH 45, UTAH STATE 38
RUSTON, La. — Daniel Porter rushed for 114 yards and had a 22-yard touchdown run to grab a 42-38 lead with 8:41 remaining as the Bulldogs (6-4, 4-2) blew a big lead, then rallied past the Aggies (2-9, 2-5), who had taken a 38-35 lead on Diondre Borel's 13-yard run with 11:30 left.
The Aggies trailed 35-17 before beginning their comeback in the third quarter.
FRESNO STATE 24, NEW MEXICO STATE 17
FRESNO, Calif. — Tom Brandstater ran for two touchdowns, including a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter to break a 17-all halftime tie as the Bulldogs (6-4, 3-3) became bowl eligible after beating the Aggies (3-7, 1-5).
Chase Holbrook completed 27 of 38 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown but was sacked five times as the Aggies were held to minus-nine yards rushing for the game.
