The future of women's surfing arrived on the North Shore today.
Carissa Moore, a Punahou School junior, won the women's division of the Reef Hawaiian Pro contest today at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.
Moore, 16, is one of the most decorated amateur surfers in the world, and today was her first significant professional victory.
"I really wasn't expecting this, so I don't know what to say," she said. "I was kind of hoping to go out there and have fun, but I was nervous out there. I'm so stoked it worked out."
The field featured most of the world's top-ranked professional female surfers. Moore qualified for the contest through a separate trials heat.
Moore received $4,500 and moved into the lead for the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing championship. The Reef Hawaiian Pro is the first of three events in the Triple Crown series.
Australia's Layne Beachley, a seven-time former world champion, placed second. Beachley, 36, was the only veteran surfer to reach the final.
Australia's Laura Enever, 17, placed third. Sunset Beach's Coco Ho, 17, finished fourth.
