Waianae video makes national 'safe driving' semifinals

Advertiser Staff

For residents still suffering from campaign withdrawal, here's a last-minute chance to vote for something beyond the presidential election — something that will, like Hawai'i-born Barack Obama's recent historic victory, do Hawai'i proud.

You have until 1 p.m. tomorrow to cast a vote for the Searider Productions' video, "Driving Safe," which has reached the semifinals in a national video competition.

Wai'anae High School's award-winning Searider Productions is asking folks to log on and vote for the student-produced video that's among the final 15 videos being considered for the Holiday Holla online contest, sponsored by the Allstate Foundation and www.keepthedrive.com.

As always, the Wai'anae students took an unconventional approach to the very serious subject — safe driving among teens — by producing a fun musical video that drives the point home without being gory or scary. To do that, the video combines live action and animation, said Candy Suiso, Searider Productions' program director.

"It's a light, half-cartoonish, half-real video of the kids driving down Farrington Highway in this big bus they made out of cardboard," said Suiso. "It has a great message during the holiday season, to not drink and drive, and to drive safely. And everybody arrives safely at their destination."

Should Searider Productions take the top prize, three team members and instructor John Allen will win an all-expense paid trip to the Great Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., during the first week of December, and a chance to win $10,000 as well as to perform the catchy Christmas lyrics written for the video by the students.

To vote, log on at HolidayHolla.KeepTheDrive.com/videos/ and mark your ballot for "Driving Safe."
