Heavy rains cause three sewer manhole spills on Oahu

Advertiser Staff

There have been at least three sewer manhole overflows due to heavy rains on Oahu.

The Clean Water Branch said there was a 2,340 gallon sewer manhole overflow at 497 Luakini Street and a 255 gallon sewer manhole overflow at 2756 Dow Street, both in Nuuanu. The public is advised to stay out of Nuuanu Stream, which flows into Honolulu Harbor.

The CWB said there was also a 4,125 gallon sewer manhole overflow due to heavy rains at the intersection of Hele Street and Keolu Drive on the Windward side. The public is advised to stay out of waters around the mouth of Kaelepulu Stream at Kailua Beach.

Warning signs are being posted at all three spills and water samples will be taken.

The CWB said the public is advised to stay out of all coastal waters affected by flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, chemicals, and associated flood debris. If coastal waters are turbid and brown, stay out.
