An afternoon fire today caused major damage to an apartment in Kailua.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Robert Main said damage to unit A101 at 350 Aoloa St. is estimated at $80,000 to the structure and $40,000 to the contents. The fire was reported at 1:13 p.m. and declared under control at 1:27 p.m.

No one was at home when the fire started and cause is under investigation, Main said.

Firefighters were forced to break into the unit due to heavy clutter near the door, Main said.
