HAWAII BRIEFS
Jaywalker critical after being struck

Advertiser Staff

A 38-year-old man was critically injured late Friday night after he was struck by a car while jaywalking across McCully Street between Ala Wai and Kapi'olani boulevards, police said.

The man was struck about 11:25 p.m. by a 2002 Chevrolet multipurpose vehicle that was traveling south on McCully, police investigators said.

The pedestrian was attempting to cross McCully from east to west when he darted out from the curb. The impact sent him flying and he wound up on the sidewalk on the west side of the street, police said.

They said the man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and listed in serious condition upon arrival. His condition later worsened to critical.

A 54-year-old man driving the Chevrolet was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, police said.

Speed and alcohol were not factors on the part of the driver, police said. It was not known whether the injured pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident, police said.

MANOA STABBING SUSPECT ARRESTED

Police say a suspect turned himself in and was arrested Friday in the Nov. 15 stabbing and robbery of a cab driver in Manoa.

According to details in a police report, two men, one in his mid-20s and the other in his mid-40s, had flagged the driver, 54, in Makiki and asked him to take them to Manoa Valley.

Once at their destination, the older customer asked the driver for change and pulled out a knife, a police report said.

The driver and the suspect struggled and the driver was stabbed several times, the report said. The men then fled.

The driver was initially taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The second suspect is still at large.
