YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan fired football coach Jeff Genyk on Monday after five seasons and a 15-42 record.

The Eagles dropped to 2-9 following Saturday's 55-45 loss to Temple in Philadelphia. Eastern is 1-6 in Mid-American Conference play.

Genyk, whose conference record at Eastern is 12-26, will coach his final game at home Friday against MAC rival Central Michigan.

"Winning consistently in football has been a challenge for our institution long before the arrival of coach Genyk," athletic director Derrick Gragg said in a written statement. "I credit coach Genyk and his entire staff for working tirelessly in attempting to improve our program, but we have not met our aspirations for football."

For Genyk, 2007 was his best season in Ypsilanti. The Eagles were 4-8 overall and 3-4 in the MAC, tying for third in the conference's West Division.

The search for a replacement will begin immediately, said Gragg, who has enlisted former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr to advise him. Gragg was compliance director at Michigan from 1997-2000. Carr retired after last season.
