KAHULUI, Maui — A 59-year-old Maui man is believed to have died as a result of a two-vehicle collision Saturday on Kahului Beach Road.
James Tavares, 59, of Wailuku, was driving a Silverado pickup truck that was involved in a collision with an Acura sedan at 3:12 p.m. just south of Kanaloa Avenue, police said. Tavares was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center along with a 48-year-old female and a 19-year-old male who also were injured in the collision.
Although he did not appear to suffer life-threatening injuries, Tavares died several hours later, police said.
An autopsy was conducted today but the exact cause of death was not immediately known, said pathologist Dr. Anthony Manoukian. However, Tavares had a history of serious heart disease and the collision likely triggered medical problems that led to his death, Manoukian said.
There have been 21 traffic fatalities in Maui County so far this year compared with 19 a year ago.
