LONDON — England and New Zealand will be competing for a trophy as well as a one-off victory when they meet at Twickenham on Saturday.

The teams will play for a new trophy honoring Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander who was the first man to climb Mount Everest.

The Hillary Shield was unveiled Thursday by Hillary's widow, June, and will be contested whenever England and New Zealand play tests outside the World Cup.

"It's a great trophy befitting a great man who achieved so much in his life and was respected all around the world," England captain Steve Borthwick said. "I'm sure it will enhance the rich history of games between England and New Zealand."

Hillary, with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 as part of the British Everest Exhibition.

He died on Jan. 11 this year and was given a state funeral in New Zealand. Britain's Queen Elizabeth II also hosted a memorial for him at Windsor Castle.

The shield was designed and made by the same manufacturer that is responsible for the care of the FA Cup and the Ryder Cup.
