Jack Bauer returns, Will Smith is a reluctant superhero and Eddie Murphy is an alien. All arrived on DVD this week.
"24: REDEMPTION"; FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT
The lowdown: Two days after he returns to TV, Jack Bauer makes his way to DVD in this prequel to the show's seventh season.
The DVD features footage not shown during the broadcast. The digital transfer is clean and sharp.
Don't miss: A sneak peek at Season 7, a making-of featurette, a look at "Children at War" and a commentary track that features Kiefer Sutherland.
Rated: Not rated
"HANCOCK" (TWO-DISC UNRATED SPECIAL EDITION); SONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT
The lowdown: The summer feature starring Will Smith as a reluctant, anti-social superhero zooms onto DVD in a two-disc set that offers a longer, unrated version of the movie as well as the theatrical release.
Critics were chilly to the movie, giving it a 38 percent positive rating at www.Rottentomatoes.com. Claudia Puig of USA Today wrote, "What starts out with a sense of quirky fun loses direction and devolves into a mishmash of story lines."
Both feature strong digital transfers, with the audio track being exceptionally exciting.
Don't miss: A digital copy of the movie to download on your PC, a making-of featurette, a behind-the-scenes on the stunt work, a look at the production design, a peek at the use of pre-visualization, a featurette on the special effects and the costume design and a profile of director Peter Berg are among the many extras.
Rated: Unrated; also PG-13 version available
"MEET DAVE"; FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT
The lowdown: Eddie Murphy stars as Dave, a spaceship that is a replica of a human in this comedy that had about as much impact as a burned-up meteorite.
Even Murphy fans may not be able to tolerate this nonsense.
Critics lambasted the movie, giving it a 19 percent positive rating on the tomatometer. Puig wrote, "The lackluster title hints at the dull, witless and hackneyed story."
The only saving grace is a decent digital transfer and the fact that the movie is offered in widescreen and full-screen formats.
Don't miss: A dearth of extras: A gag reel and crew confessions are the main offerings.
Rated: PG-13, crude language
