Like Hollywood's Golden Globes, Korea has the Blue Dragon Awards, which recognize the best films from the previous years and gives awards for various categories in cinema.
This year's ceremony was held Nov. 20. The masters of ceremonies were Jeong Joon Ho, who was in Hawai'i last month for a charity event, and Kim Hye Soo, a veteran movie/drama actress.
The film "Forever the Moment," which was screened at the Spring Showcase at the Hawaii International Film Festival, won best picture. The movie is based on a true story about a Korean women's handball team going for the gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Director Kim Jee Woon took the best-director award for his film "The Good, The Bad and The Weird," which sold out on the closing night of last month's Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival. Kim was present for the festival, where he received the Maverick Award in directing. It wasn't Kim's first appearance at the festival. In 2005, he came for the screening of "Bittersweet Life," along with Lee Byung Hun.
Kim's film "A Tale of Two Sisters" is being remade in Hollywood and scheduled to be released in early 2009.
"The Good, The Bad and The Weird" stars Jung Woo Sung, who received the Achievement in Acting Award at last month's HIFF, received the Popularity Award at the Blue Dragon Awards.
"The Good, The Bad and The Weird" took home a total of four Blue Dragon awards: the most attended Korean film, best director, and cinematography and art direction.
The best-actor award was given to Kim Yoon-seok for his detective-turned-pimp role in the successful thriller "The Chaser," one of my favorite films at HIFF this year. I held onto my seat from start to finish and was so wired that I couldn't fall asleep for several hours after the movie ended at midnight.
"The Chaser" is being remade in Hollywood and Leonardo DiCaprio is part of the cast.
The best new actress was given to Han Ye-seul for her role in "Miss Gold Digger," which was screened at the Spring Showcase at HIFF earlier this year. She is also currently in the drama "War of the Flowers" as Nan-sook. The new hot actress is in high demand, so expect to see her in many more movies and dramas.
