Rockfall, stream projects funded

Gov. Linda Lingle has released more than $1.7 million to reduce the danger of rockfalls and to restore streams on Maui, Kaua'i and O'ahu.
"These projects will make necessary improvements and reduce the risk of incidents across the state," Lingle said in a statement.
The projects include:
Lanikai Rockfall Mitigation: $965,000 to remove boulder and rock outcroppings on a state-owned parcel near private residences.
Design is scheduled to begin in November and construction in July, with completion in October 2009.
Makaua Stream (O'ahu) and Wailapa Stream/Kilauea River (Kaua'i) Restoration: $700,000 in state money to supplement federal funds for stream restoration. There was stream-bank erosion and reduced stream capacity at both sites during the March 2006 floods.
The Makaua Stream work is scheduled to run from November to June.
The Wailapa Stream/Kilauea River project is to begin next summer and be completed in early 2010.
Pauoa Rockfall Mitigation (O'ahu): $75,000 to prevent loose rocks and boulders on state-owned land from falling onto homes and other private property below. Work is scheduled to begin next May and be completed in July.
Koki Beach Rockfall Mitigation (Maui): $30,000 to investigate and recommend measures to address potential rockfall and landslide hazards on state-owned land adjacent to private property. Design is to begin in December and be completed in March.
