Ex-UH volleyball star Collins in Hall of Fame

Deitre Collins, a three-time All-American for the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team, has been selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
The 2008 Hall of Fame Class, which also includes Long Beach State coach Brian Gimmillaro and retired Stanford coach Don Shaw, will be inducted Dec. 18 in Omaha, Neb. during the annual AVCA Convention.
"If you want to know the quality people in volleyball, just look at this year's AVCA Hall of Fame class," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "The first volleyball player to win the Honda Broderick Cup awarded to the top woman athlete in the country, a coach who has trained players who have competed in over 10 Olympic games, and the coach with the highest winning percentage of any collegiate coach ever ... and they were not in our Hall of Fame until this year. Remarkable people, outstanding achievements."
Collins, now Collins-Parker, led the Rainbow Wahine to a 138-15 record and national championships in 1982 and '83. She also won the Broderick Cup, symbolic of the nation's top female collegiate athlete, as the first volleyball player to earn that distinction.
Collins-Parker played in the 1988 Seoul Olympics before embarking on a 15-year coaching career. She is currently head coach at Cornell University.
"(She) is an excellent ambassador for the sport of volleyball as she is known for her playing achievements while being very sincere and modest," said Sarah Bernson, assistant volleyball coach at Cornell, in her nomination of Collins-Parker. "Even though her playing days ended in 1992, Deitre is continually being recognized for her playing ability and success."

CHAMINADE FALLS
Amanda Goddell and Mariesa Nielson each had 15 kills as host Dixie State defeated Chaminade, 19-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. George, Utah.
Katie Luna added 13 kills and 20 digs for Dixie State (5-7, 2-2).
Trina Kauliakamoa had 12 kills and 11 digs, and Samantha Miller added nine kills and 10 digs for the Silverswords (8-8, 3-3).
HAWAI'I PACIFIC WINS
Kelly Balanay had 14 kills as Hawai'i Pacific defeated host Cal State Monterey Bay, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-12, last night in a non-conference match at Seaside, Calif.
Natasha Bell added 10 kills and 11 digs, and Tricia Yoshimura contributed 25 digs for the Sea Warriors (3-10).
Alisha Thomas led Monterey Bay (4-12) with 13 kills.
WINTER BASEBALL
CANEFIRES GO TO 4-0
The West Oahu CaneFires rallied from a three-run deficit by scoring in each of the last four innings to beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 9-6, and remain unbeaten in Hawaii Winter Baseball last night at Hans L'Orange Park.
The CaneFires (4-0), who trailed 4-1 after five innings, broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the eighth — sparked by James Skelton's two-run double to deep center field.
Mike Ramlow pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory.
Roger Kieschnick hit a two-run homer and Marquez Smith added a solo shot for the BeachBoys (0-4).
Earlier, the North Shore Honu — after being no-hit through six innings — scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the Honolulu Sharks, 6-6.
The game was scheduled for a maximum of seven innings due to the squads' depleted pitching staffs.
The Honu (1-2-1) scored their first four runs without a hit, relying on six walks and an error to get runners on base, and bringing three home on sacrifice flies.
The Sharks (2-1-1) took a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh on Kala Ka'aihue's RBI single.
North Shore tied the score on Kyle Martin's sacrifice fly and Corey Brown's RBI double.
Jim Rapoport had three hits and Bradley Emaus added two hits and two RBIs for Honolulu.
IN-LINE HOCKEY
PRO CONDUCTS CLINIC
Professional ice and in-line hockey player Doug Jones returns to Hawai'i to provide a free clinic Oct. 11 and 12 at the Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base.
Jones' trip is sponsored by the Oahu In-Line Hockey League (OIHL). The event is geared toward youth players but all levels are invited to attend. Registration is required.
