Fire Prevention Week ceremony planned

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department will kick off Fire Prevention Week with a ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday in the department headquarters auditorium. The ceremony will feature several events, including the Fire Prevention Week proclamation signing by Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the unveiling of the 2008 Fire Fighter's Safety Guide, the debut of several fire safety public safety announcements and the rollout of a new smoke alarm installation program.

"Each event highlights how the HFD builds and promotes partnerships to ensure that fire safety and education is a year-round activity," said Fire Chief Kenneth Silva. "We are grateful that in 2008, we continued the Fire Fighter's Safety Guide with the Department of Education, produced wildland fire prevention PSAs with Searider Productions, and began a residential smoke alarm installation program with the support of HMSA,"

This year, Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 5-11. Each year, the HFD joins the National Fire Protection Association and other safety advocates to promote a fire safety and prevention theme. This year's theme is, "It's Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!"

In addition to the FPW events, Chapter 483 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart will dedicate a memorial award to nine HFD fire fighters who were injured, three mortally, while fighting fires at Hickam Field during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
