SURFING

PATACCHIA ADVANCES

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore won two heats to advance to the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Mundaka men's surfing contest yesterday.

The entire second round and four heats of the third round were run yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain.

Patacchia defeated Kaua'i's Roy Powers in the third round, 13.6-12.34.

"Roy (Powers) is a really tough competitor," Patacchia said. "He's one of the better surfers out of Hawai'i and he's been surfing really good. He surfed really well in France and really well out here and I didn't want to take him lightly."

Patacchia is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest.

Pancho Sullivan from O'ahu's North Shore was eliminated in the second round.

Florida's Kelly Slater did not surf yesterday. He is scheduled to face Eneko Acero of Basque Country in the third round. If Slater wins that heat, he will clinch his ninth world championship.
