Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha Highway between Kamananui Street and the Joseph Leong Bypass Road was closed in both directions for more than three hours yesterday because of a head-on collision at about 12:47 p.m. that sent two people to the hospital.

Drivers of both cars were extricated from the vehicles at about 1:15 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

A 22-year-old man from Wahiawa who was traveling east veered into the westbound lane and crashed head-on into a car driven by a 54-year-old woman from the Salt Lake area, police said.

Both were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The man was upgraded to serious condition, but the woman remained in critical condition last night, police said.

Police said speed was a factor.

A Kahului woman ran over her 1-year-old son as she was backing her car out of her driveway yesterday, according to the Maui County Police Department.

The baby boy suffered "critical, life-threatening injuries" and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. The accident occurred at 8:10 a.m.

Speed and alcohol are not suspected to be involved, police said. Maui police are investigating what is being classified as a near-fatal pedestrian accident.
