WACO, Texas — The Oklahoma Sooners avoided the same trap that helped them get back to No. 1.

"All of the conditions were right for us to come down here and not play well, not get excited, not bring any energy and for Baylor to play great and beat us," Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford said. "We knew we had to come out and had to play well."

With No. 5 Texas looming next on the schedule, the Sooners still never gave Baylor a chance for an upset.

Bradford threw for 372 yards with two touchdowns, DeMarco Murray ran for two scores and four other Sooners got into the end zone in another lopsided victory over the Bears, 49-17, yesterday in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Oklahoma (5-0) this week moved into the No. 1 spot of the AP poll for a record 96th time, but first since 2003, after an upset-filled weekend when the Sooners were the only one of the top four teams to win. They seemed intent on making it 97 after a quick start against Baylor.

Manuel Johnson caught a 53-yard touchdown only 70 seconds into the game for the Sooners' quickest opening score this season. They built a 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

"I loved the way we started off," coach Bob Stoops said. "We executed and have good momentum going in (against Texas). I'd rather go in this way than any other."

Next week, the Sooners have their traditional second-Saturday-in-October meeting against the Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl — in the middle of the State Fair of Texas. But they made this trip across the Red River seem more like a glorified practice session.

Oklahoma has never lost to Baylor (2-3) in 18 games. The last five in Waco have been decided by an average margin of 36 points.

The Sooners didn't make it to the Texas game undefeated last year, getting upset in their conference opener at Colorado. There was no overlooking a lowly opponent this time.

"Last year, that's what we were doing, kind of looking ahead," receiver Juaquin Iglesias said.

NO. 2 ALABAMA 17, KENTUCKY 14

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Glen Coffee rushed for 218 yards and Leigh Tiffin, who missed two field-goal attempts earlier, kicked a 24-yarder with 2:12 left as the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) held off the Wildcats (4-1, 0-1).

Mike Hartline hit DeMoreo Ford streaking down the right sideline for a 48-yard touchdown pass with 40 seconds left for the Wildcats. The onside kick attempt went out of bounds to give Alabama the ball and the game.

"We're certainly happy to win but we also put on a clinic today for how to keep the other team in the game," said Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

NO. 4 MISSOURI 52, NEBRASKA 17

LINCOLN, Neb. — Chase Daniel threw three touchdown passes, Derrick Washington ran for 139 yards and scored three times and the fourth-ranked Tigers (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) romped to their first road win against the Cornhuskers (3-2, 0-1) in 30 years.

The 35-point defeat was the Huskers' most lopsided home loss in 53 years and fifth-worst in Lincoln in the program's 119-year history. Missouri scored the first four times it had the ball.

"That wasn't just about the 2008 football team," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "It's about 30 years of fans from around the world and a lot of former Missouri players. It's pretty good to get a win at one of the toughest places to play in the country."

NO. 5 TEXAS 38, COLORADO 14

BOULDER, Colo. — Chris Ogbonnaya scored on a 65-yard dump-off and a 13-yard gallop, then saved a score when he chased down cornerback Jalil Brown at the Texas 16 after a rare interception of Colt McCoy to lead the Longhorns (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) past the Buffaloes (3-2, 0-1).

Ogbonnaya's trio of tremendous plays helped the Longhorns take a 21-0 halftime lead and assured there would be no peeking toward next weekend's Red River Rivalry showdown against top-ranked Oklahoma in Dallas.

"It's what these two teams should have at midseason. It's two top-five teams that are both playing really well," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "We'll have everybody in America talking about the game next week, and that's what we want."

NO. 6 PENN STATE 20, PURDUE 6

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Evan Royster ran for 141 yards and a touchdown, and also had 53 yards on four catches as the Nittany Lions (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) beat the Boilermakers (2-3, 0-1) in their last test before next Saturday's showdown at Wisconsin.

Daryll Clark completed 18 of 26 passes for 226 yards and ran for a score for Penn State, which outgained Purdue 422 yards to 241.

Penn State's Joe Paterno coached the game from the press box because a lingering right hip injury limited his mobility.

NO. 7 TEXAS TECH 58, KANSAS STATE 28

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Graham Harrell threw six touchdown passes, including three to Lyle Leong, and shattered the Texas Tech record for career yards passing, as the Red Raiders (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) pilled up 626 yards of total offense to beat the Wildcats (3-2, 0-1).

Harrell was 38-for-51 for 454 yards. The three-year starter ran his career total to 12,709 yards, erasing the record of 12,429 yards by Kliff Kingsbury from 1999-02.

NO. 12 FLORIDA 38, ARKANSAS 7

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Tim Tebow threw two touchdown passes, and Jeffrey Demps ran for 103 yards, including touchdown runs of 36 and 48 yards, as the Gators (4-1, 2-1) rebounded from an upset loss to Ole Miss to beat the Razorbacks (2-3, 0-2) in preparation for next weekend's huge Southeastern Conference matchup with LSU.

The Gators led 17-7 late in the third quarter when Jerry Franklin picked off Tebow, snapping the Heisman Trophy winner's streak at 203 passes without an interception.

NO. 19 VANDERBILT 14, NO. 13 AUBURN 13

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mackenzi Adams came off the bench and threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Commodores (5-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) beat the Tigers (4-2, 2-2) for their first 5-0 start since 1953.

The win keeps the Commodores undefeated atop the SEC East while also snapping a 13-game skid to Auburn. It was Vandy's first win in this series since the 1955 Gator Bowl.

NO. 14 OHIO STATE 20, NO. 18 WISCONSIN 17

MADISON, Wis. — Quarterback Terrelle Pryor ran for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:08 left and Chris "Beanie" Wells had 168 yards rushing and a score as the Buckeyes held off the Badgers (3-2, 0-2).

The last time the Buckeyes played a marquee game under the lights, they got pounded by Southern California last month. Wells didn't play in that game and Pryor, the talented freshman, wasn't the starter.

NO. 16 KANSAS 35, IOWA STATE 33

AMES, Iowa — Todd Reesing threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns, including a 21-yard TD pass to Kerry Meier with 3:39 left for a 35-26 lead as the Jayhawks (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) rallied from a 20-point halftime deficit to beat the Cyclones (2-3, 0-1).

Meier caught seven passes for 125 yards and two TDs for the Jayhawks (4-1, 1-0 Big 12), who tied the third-biggest comeback in school history.

NO. 20 VIRGINIA TECH 27, WESTERN KENTUCKY 13

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Darren Evans ran for two touchdowns, quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for another and the Hokies (5-1) opened up a 27-3 lead in beating the Hilltoppers (2-4).

Dustin Keys had field goals of 22 and 27 yards for Virginia Tech, which lost starting tailback Kenny Lewis Jr. to a ruptured Achilles' tendon in the third quarter.

NO. 21 OKLAHOMA ST. 56, TEXAS A&M 28

STILLWATER, Okla. — Dez Bryant caught three passes for touchdowns and scored another on a punt return, and the Cowboys (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) took advantage of five first-half turnovers in rolling over the Aggies (2-3, 0-1).

The Cowboys set a school record by surpassing 50 points for the fourth straight game, but not without some big help from their defense and special teams. Ugo Chinasa and Patrick Lavine each scored on interception returns as Oklahoma State snapped a four-game losing streak to the Aggies (2-3, 0-1).

NORTH CAROLINA 38, NO. 24 CONNECTICUT 12

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Shawn Draughn rushed for a career-high 109 yards and a touchdown and defensive lineman Marvin Austin returned an interception 23 yards for another score as the Tar Heels (4-1) routed the Huskies (5-1).

Bruce Carter blocked three punts, Matt Merletti fell on one of them for a touchdown and Draughn's 39-yard touchdown run started the game-breaking sequence that gave the Tar Heels their first win over a ranked team in three years.
